Abstract
The healthcare system varies depending on the state, population, socioeconomic status, availability of resources, and many other factors that affect the access to care that the people can obtain. Accessibility of a comprehensive and high-quality health care system is important in the promotion and maintenance of good health, prevention and management of diseases, reductions of disabilities and early death, and the achievement of equity in health for all people, regardless of race, social status, or other possible factors that affect the current system. In this paper, the issue regarding the inaccessibility of health care will be discussed in detail, as well as the possible implementation of a project which aims to improve and widen the scope and benefits in health care that the people of the nation can acquire, in consideration to the factors which currently affects our health care system.
The Background
There is a common misconception that the inaccessibility of health care only happens in rural areas of the country, and although this is also true there are many other populations who experience the inaccessibility of high-quality health care due to various reasons. As previously stated, health care encompasses many services and benefits towards the people in the community and does not only refer to medical treatment. This also prevents chronic diseases such as chronic kidney disease, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and diabetes, in the community which is often seen to have higher hospitalization and mortality rates (Bindman, Grumbach, et al., 1995). There is a need to address this issue because it affects the quality of life of people from varying age groups and genders.
The common barriers in accessing health care for all the people in the nation are the expensive cost of health care services, inadequacy or non-availability of insurance coverage, lack of services available to the people, and lack of competence in providing quality patient care (Office of Disease Control and Prevention, 2020). These barriers cause unfulfilled health needs of the patients, delays in receiving suitable and proper care, financial burdens, inefficacy in receiving preventive measures, and preventable hospitalizations.
Statistical Findings
Based on the data of a study from 1997 to 2017, regarding the accessibility of health care to the Americans including the trend as the years progress, there is a delay or failure to receive the necessary medical care, services, and prescription drugs with an average of 8.6%. Inaccessibility of health care services in adults from 18 years of age to 64 years old are experienced more in people experiencing poverty, reaching 24.8% which is attributed to poverty and expensive medical cost. Among the sample population throughout the years that the study was conducted, the percentage of people without medical insurance to cover for the medical expenses needed are ranging from 25.5 to 39.0% resulting to delay or nonreceipt of needed health care services (Center for Disease Control and Prevention, 2018).
In this study, other factors such as the race of the patien...
