Occupational therapy (OT) is a comprehensive course concerned with rehabilitating people with diverse issues in life. Ideally, the course entails equipping students with meaningful skills and expertise to re-engage in meaningful daily activities to help people with health challenges. Besides this, OT focuses on education, intense training, and participation in daily activities rather than solely relying on prescription or surgical interventions.
OT was first introduced in 1917 in the US (Novak & Honan, 2019). It was developed to treat AIDS, polio, and tuberculosis. The victims of these diseases were dying from stress and stigma, and thus the OT was introduced. Since then, the course has undergone various changes and interdicted at various health complications to help heal the victims.
The role of OT is quite different from that of ordinary doctors. OT treats injured, ill, or disabled individuals through the therapeutic use of daily activities. The everyday activities are essential as they help the victims develop, recover, improve, and maintain skills that would help them back to their daily activities (Novak & Honan, 2019). OT does not recommend the victims to buy any medicines or undergo surgical treatment; instead, it uses self-care, work, and play activities to restore the initial conditions of the patient.
