The Nursing Process
Introduction
The Nursing Process can be defined as a strategy or formula that unites the different types of nurses in their distinct areas of practice. The process allows every nurse involved in patient care to deliver care that is holistic and patient-centered continually. The process entails five phases which include assessment, diagnosis, planning, implementation, and evaluation (Younas, 2017). The nursing process effectively puts nursing knowledge into practice, consequently leading to an increase in the quality of nursing care. It is an integral part of health care delivery today, as it was during the revolution of the nursing role. It incorporates the principles of critical thinking, patient-specific strategies, goal-oriented activities, intuition, and evidence-based practice strategies (Younas, 2017). The health care department in the United States has ensured that every health care institution/facility in the country is implementing and articulating the nursing process when delivering patient care, whether in inpatient care or outpatient basis.
Diagnosis and Staging of Cancer
Staging and diagnosis are critical in classifying the several existing types of cancers. A cancer diagnosis takes the joint effort of all health care professionals in evaluating and studying how both the normal and cancer cells appear when examined under a microscope. Diagnosis can be made in several methods. These methods include laboratory serum tests, imaging technologies, biopsies, ultrasounds, and scans (Pan et al., 2019). When the diagnostic tests indicate that the patient may be having cancer, more tests may be necessary to assist the doctors in creating a treatment plan. Cancer staging requires further tests to examine the degree to which cancer cells have spread and grown over a specific period. Cancer staging is vital as it gives insight to the health care professionals on board, enabling them to direct appropriate treatment on the correct body parts.
Staging is done for several other reasons. These include estimating the prognosis, comparing results over time, informing the administration of standardized clinical trials, guiding decisions on the treatment to be applied, and finally informing the severity of the cancerous growth. Depending on the type of cancer, different tests are used. They may include a physical examination, imaging techniques such as Magnetic Resonance Imaging, and CT scans (Lord et al., 2020). They may also have laboratory tests and surgical impressions. The Tumor, Nodal status, and metastasis (TNM) system is mainly used in cancer staging (Lord et al., 2020). Most health care professionals often use the numeral system from one to four. Clinical staging involves physical patient examination and diagnostic imaging. On the other hand, Pathological staging can be done through tumor removal and lymph node sampling.
