The effects of climate change can be felt by many populations especially the African American communities. The different levels of certain elements in the atmosphere cause severe weather patterns that lead to frequent and strong rainfall, hurricanes, extreme heat and dry spells, and even heat waves. Such climate can increase the risk of transmission of diseases, interfere with food supply chains, and cause damage to essential infrastructures such as roadways and sewer systems. The impacts of climate change can be mitigated through creation of Climate Policies that seek to improve the status of life and create safeguards that ensure continuation of livelihood and access to essential goods. African Americans are disproportionately affected by climate change because this demographic tend to live in areas that are more vulnerable. (Fagliano & Diez Roux, 2018)
Many African American communities are situated in areas that have a higher hazard when it comes to the impacts of climate change. Disaster can strike areas that are near dangerous sites such as powerplants, chemical factories, and production lines. Many African American communities are adjacent to such places, which supports the need to create proper policies and implementation to protect their access to health service and climate risk reduction. Many neighborhoods in the past have been subject to severe flooding which can cause loss of livelihood and shelter. The members of such communities can be put in danger in times of extreme weather.
In History, African Americans have bee subject to much hardship and challenges because of racism. Many communities were forced to settle in less desirable areas which are flood prone all across the U.S. IN 2005, Hurricane Katrina showed the subsequent consequences of not preparing for climate disaster, as it claimed thousands of lives and destroyed many homes. Demographic studies show that a large portion of the affected population were African Americans. Negative Climate change happens because of various factors, including pollution, excessive production and consumption, and environmental destruction. This exacerbates the inequities that are already experienced by the African Communities and other minorities that are not prioritized by the government. (Frank, 2021)
