Daniel Goleman on Social Intelligence and Leadership
Daniel Goleman, a psychologist, depicts various qualities of effective leadership. He emphasizes that emotional and social intelligence play significant roles in determining whether an individual is an effective leader or not. According to Goleman, emotional intelligence entails how people handle themselves, whether they are empathetic, and how they manage their emotions based on others’ feelings. Effective leaders are good listeners and coach their employees on various things that affect a firm’s performance. They ask other individuals about their strengths and weaknesses to know where they need to improve. On the contrary, social intelligence involves reading others’ minds, knowing how they feel, and their thoughts to facilitate effective communication. Specifically, it can be enhanced by asking questions such as whether one cares, is the person motivated, and whether an individual can get feedback. Consequently, emotional intelligence helps an organization choose the appropriate culture, guides leaders on how to handle themselves, and motivates workers.
During my last internship, I encountered an effective leader. I admired how the person influenced his junior employees and the relationship he had developed. I believe he had social and emotional intelligence. The leader motivates workers by giving them rewards for good actions. He was a good listener and ensured that he empathized and comforted his employees during their challenging moments. At some point, he demonstrated qualities of effective leadership based on how he addressed conflicts among workers. After listening to both employees, he proved to them that the arguments they made were correct, but at that point, they needed to agree on common objectives. I liked how he made people feel comfortable, and all workers wanted to interact with him. Everyone was happy to have him around since he had positive energy.

For example, the emotion of fear discourages individuals from engaging in risky things. The primary similarity between fear and disgust is that they have protective benefits.
