Review of Richard III: An Arab Tragedy
Richard III- an Arab Tragedy, is a play in one unnamed oil-rich location in the Gulf state. The play is an adaptation of Shakespeare’s Richard III. The play takes place in the Swan Theatre presented by the Culture Project of Kuwait, written, directed and produced by Sulayman Al-Bassam. The play begins within a houthouse, unpleasant, unsettle atmosphere of palaces located in the desert kingdom where lives Queen Elizabeth. The kingdom and the whole environment is filled with notions of tribal allegiances, feuds and fighting between families and struggle for absolute power just as it was in Shakespeare’s Richard III.
The story revolves a renowned stage and film actor from Syria called Fayez Kazak who plays the character of Emir Gloucester as a clever and brutal manipulator attempting to fight tyrants who seize the nation and cling to its power with the help of new advanced technology, propaganda and social brutality (Litvin, 86). Moreover, in the play, there is an instance where the sinister United States Ambassadors, use religion to justify their outward atrocity besides neglecting the legal structures of the land and breaking the law before the ruler. However, the foreigners failed in achieving their success because of the efforts and violence of Gloucester in his protection of young princes.
