Synopsis
The film documentary "The Long Walk of Nelson Mandela," produced and released by Frontline in 1999, details important facts about the life of Nelson Mandela, from his youth to his adulthood, where he impacted the most people in his time ("The Long Walk of Nelson Mandela"). Mandela was a visionary who revolutionized democracy and social justice, not only in Africa but also around the world.
The documentary first discussed the narrative of Nelson Mandela's early life and comparatively royal upbringing in his hometown. The chiefs from Transkei narrated stories of how a young Nelson Mandela would conduct himself and behave before he ran away to Johannesburg with almost nothing to his name. There, he continued his studies so that he would be able to achieve his goals. He met his mentor and studied Law because he had a keen interest in Politics. Because of his experiences with the discrimination against black people, then opened his eyes to the truths of the world.
The documentary also tackled other aspects of Mandela's life, from his time as a prisoner and his personal life as an adult. After Mandela graduated, some people advised him to keep out of politics, but he was already regarded as an influential leader. The establishment of the apartheid eventually led to further protests from the black community, and Mandela both observed and experienced unjustness. Because of events that transpired, he was arrested and imprisoned in Robben Island. He was released from prison in February 1990 (Ndovlu-Gastheni 24). In 1993, a prominent ANC leader was assassinated, which led to rallies and violence in a negative response to the assassination. When Mandela found out, he immediately flew back to Johannesburg to impart his wisdom to the people and insist on peace. He said that peace would lead to freedom. This action mitigated the damage and prevented further violence. In 1994, Mandela was elected as the president of South Africa. The documentary was concluded with a discussion of the events in the Rugby World Cup to unify the people. This is where Mandela wore the national jersey and the people chanted to celebrate and support him.
Analysis of Scenes
There were quite a few scenes shown in the documentary that detailed Nelson Mandela's life. The first scene I greatly took notice of was Mandela's burning of his passbook. This was the main reason why he was arrested, as, at the time, colored people were required to present these documents, and without these in their person, they were arrested. This showed the tantamount unjustness of how people of color were treated back then. One might consider that these things happened out of fear and out of the need to protect oneself, but there are those who abused it and used it for their own gain to establish power over the minorities.
