Class struggle is the main argument made in the film's narrative. The film revolves around two contrasting families where one family (Mr. Park's family) lives a luxurious life compared to the poor conditions experienced by Kim's family. The class struggle in the film's plot is developed through the theme of capitalism and what can be perceived as an allegory of colonialism in the film. With Mr. Park hailing from a wealthy family, he was able to become a well-educated businessman and continues living a luxurious life. Similarly, the children have a promising future since the parents are capable and willing to spend any amount to ensure the children are well-educated. This is different from Kim's family members, who all have the ability but no opportunities due to their position in an economic-based stratification of society. This theme of class struggle due to the capitalistic system is also brought up in the text. Marks argues that the capitalist system allows the domination of nature and other individuals in society to an unprecedented extent (140). In the text, this argument is made in the context of analyzing sensual knowledge and the concept of mimesis. The text blames the perceptions of capitalism on the alienation exhibited in society and divisions that exist between economic classes (Marks 139).
The social issue of class is the main focus of the film Parasite by Bong Joon-ho. The film diegesis is developed in such a way that the audience can easily identify the struggling class and the privileged. The contrast between the two economic classes is laid bare in the opening scene of the film. The first on-screen action the audience is introduced to is Kim's family struggling to benefit from the neighbor's Wi-Fi. Considering the film was produced in 2019, the audience can easily tell that the family cannot afford to pay for an internet connection. Moreover, we are introduced to Mr. Kim's family trying to benefit from free fumigation.
