The main focus of the documentary “The weight of the nation: Poverty and Obesity” is on obesity and how it affects the nation. Additionally, the documentary seeks to explore the current measures and proposals for future actions and strategies that can help resolve the obesity problem. The film has painted a vivid picture of the main issues surrounding obesity. Most importantly, the main argument is that the zip code in which one lives influences their health conditions, including obesity (Chaykin, 2012). Access to healthy food is the main root cause considering that the lower-income population can only afford junk food. Richer regions have fewer junk food retailers, most of which are replaced by healthy food vendors. Poverty rates are often similar to obesity incidences. For instance, the fact that two-thirds of Americans are either overweight or obese reflects the wealth distribution patterns across the country.
The film is produced by HBO Documentary Films and The Institute of Medicine. This matters because the credibility of the film can be affected by its creators. In this case, HBO Documentary Films is simply a film distributor. Documentaries can cover multiple topics, including health as in this film. The Institute of Medicine has more implications for the credibility of the film since the organization is responsible for the facts gathered. The Institute of medicine is an independent and not-for-profit organization, which allows it to provide authoritative and unbiased advice to policy makers. Therefore, it can be expected that all facts of the film are true and credible and not influenced either by the government or private sector lobbyists and stakeholders. Additionally, the involvement of this institution matters since the film is about public health.
There is evidence that points to individual solutions for the obesity epidemic in the film, especially the initiatives by the local municipal authorities. Access to healthy food is the major problem that needs to be addressed, which has seen many cities partner with vendors to improve access to fresh vegetables and fruits. The population acknowledges the problem and embraces the solutions implemented by the government.
