His Girl Friday deviates from Hawks` other movies that primarily centered on male lead characters and women who were usually subordinate to their male counterparts. It had a riveting twist on the Hawksian women whom Howard Hawks always portrayed as dependent on men even if they had their vocations. In this film, Hildy Johnson, played by Rosalind Russel, is depicted as a firebrand character with an influential role in the main journalistic work. His Girl Friday, directed by Howard Hawks, was MacArthur's and Hecht's second screen version of their well-liked stage play, The Front Page. In this movie, the director changed Hildy Johnson's character to be a woman, and she doubled in as Grant's star reporter. She is Grant's ex-wife, the unscrupulous Morning Post editor, played by Walter Burns.
