Critical response to Style Wars by Tony Silver
Directed by Henry Chalfant and Tony Silver, Style Wars sheds light on historical moments of hip hop culture during the 1970s to the late 1980s. The film originally aired on January 18th, 1984 on PBS television. Due to its popularity, the film was adopted by Vancouver films and even won the Grand Jury Prize at Sundance Film Festival. Although graffiti is the main theme in the film, bboying and rapping are also covered but to a lesser extent. The influential nature of Style Wars was witnessed when The Radio Dept, a Swedish music band, and DJ Mutt adopted audio samples from the film in their songs; “Never Follow Suit” and “Big Lights, Big City” respectively.
Style wars center on how young people struggle to express themselves through art and their view on graffiti. As a result, the film compiled the views of many people on graffiti, including that of the then Mayor of New York City, Ed Koch. The documentary connects graffiti to a sense of identity and community rather than a crime. Therefore, style wars portray graffiti as more than just an individual or gang thing. However, while Style Wars promoted the idea that graffiti is a form of creative expression, not every person in the film held that position.
