The plot of a film plays a crucial role in exploring the events of the film in an interrelated sequence. The plot and events in the films The Green Mile and The Shawshank Redemption reveal that the main characters are wrongly convicted. In this way, the revelation of their innocence is interwoven in the plot’s films. The films ultimately, shows that the innocence of the two main characters are similar in regards to appearing guilty as the movies begin, their innocence revealed towards the end of the movies, and finally, they are never legally absolved of the alleged crimes.
One thing evident as the films begin is that the main characters are revealed as guilty of gruesome crimes. In the film The Green Mile, the character of John Coffey is revealed to have killed two young white girls. There is nothing in the beginning that indicates otherwise because when a search party was set up, they found John in the woods crying uncontrollably clutching the two dead girls (Amazon, 1999). It becomes evident to the audience that he is a murderer. In the same way, in The Shawshank Redemption the protagonist Andrew "Andy" Dufresne is also shown to be guilty. As the film starts, he is seen holding and loading a gun in a drunken state in front of his wife and her lover’s resident who were murdered. Further, since Andy tossed the gun into the river, he looks guilty in front of the audience (MovieFone, 2018).
The other way the main characters are portrayed in the two films is that the audience does not know of their innocence until almost the end of the film.
