Thesis: The filmmakers from Long shot use ethos, pathos, and logos in order to convince their audience that Juan Catalan is innocent. Identify an example from the film for each strategy and discuss its efficacy as a method of persuasion
Ethos
Ethos or appeal to ethics is convincing the audience of one’s character or moral stand. In long Shot, Juan Catalan is used to depict the moral stand of an innocent man. The LAPD are convinced that Juan murdered 16 year old Martha Puebla. There is a witness lined up and Juan’s prosecutor is nicknamed “Sniper” since she has never lost a murder case. On the other hand, Juan’s evidence cannot be corroborated as it is almost impossible to prove that he was among the spectators at Dodgers game. Even though all odds were against him, Juan convinced the audience of his innocence by remaining firm that he did not commit the murder throughout the case.
