The Sandman
           The Sandman is a short story written by E.T.A. Hoffman, a German writer. The story was first published in a book of stories, The Night Pieces, in 1817. The story opens with a letter sent by Nathaniel to Lothar. Lothar is the brother to his fiancée. However, instead, he sends the message to Clara. In the letter, Nathaniel expresses his fear of the Sandman, a monstrous being. He narrates encounters in his past, explaining that the monster was even the cause of the death of his father, after which he disappeared till he reappears in another form. Clara, also though she was not the recipient of the letter, feels sorry for Nathaniel but thinks the stories are just creations of Nathaniel’s minds.
           After recovering from the Sandman escapade, Nathaniel leaves for school to complete his final year studies. Here he meets a girl named Olimpia, whom he resolves to marry only to learn later that she was an automaton created by Spallanzani and Coppola (Purcell, 2016). Trying to pass a robot for a real human leads Coppelius in trouble forcing him to vanish. Later on, he reappears, and his reencounter with Nathaniel leads to his death.

The replicants were initially created as slaves since their enhanced strength made them provide labor effectively.
