INSTRUCTIONS RESPONSE PAPER ONE: International Cinema: Focus on Italian Neorealism
For the first paper that is due by the end of week 4, you will need to watch Vittorio De Sica's Bicycle Thieves. The film is a classic Italian Neorealist film and regarded as one of the greatest films in film history, frequently included in every Top 100 Films list.
After watching the film, choose at least 3 scenes that you will write about. Use those 3 scenes to elaborate on the following cinematic elements which the course content will have covered in the past four weeks (these techniques are also explained in the course summary video which may be worth watching again for an explanation of these techniques):
1. Cinematography (camerawork, lighting) in those 3 separate scenes
2. Editing (how the different plots, actions, scenes, and shots are brought together) in those 3 separate scenes
3. Sound (sound effects, ambient noise/environment, music/score) in those 3 separate scenes
4. Directing (character portrayal, unfolding of the story, the film's message) overall
5. Why the film was an 'effective' or 'ineffective' film overall
6. Please make sure to use the terminology from the course content. For example, when discussing cinematography you should discuss camera angles such as a close-up (first used by D.W. Griffith); or in editing, discuss whether the film used continuity editing, cross-cutting, a montage sequence (or all of the above). For editing, it will be helpful to return to the course content and review the Soviet's theory of montage to understand editing further.
7. Additionally, for each component analyzed above (cinematography, editing, sound), please:
A) Describe of the scene
B) Reference the cinematic technique used
C) Describe the impact on the audience
8. Please ensure that at least 3 scenes are provided and each contains its analysis for each cinematic element (cinematography, editing, sound, etc.)

Film: Bicycle Thieves
Bicycle Thieves is an Italian Neorealist drama film released in 1948 and directed by Vittorio De Sica. It tells the story of Antonio Ricci, who secures a job to put up advertisement posters. A bicycle is a requirement for the job, but Ricci's is stolen, setting him and his son Bruno on a long journey to search for the bicycle. Without it, Ricci would lose his job, meaning that he would not manage to provide basic needs for his family comprising his wife Maria, and sons Bruno and a little one. The film extensively uses various filmmaking techniques to develop the plot. The most significant techniques are cinematography and sound. This paper uses the opening scene in the Piazza Vittorio market and the church to describe the cinematography in the film, editing, sound and directing.
Scene 1 (00:01:18:00:03:30) comes at the beginning of the film where Ricci's name is called because he secured a job, but he is seated far from the crowd. The three outstanding cinematographic techniques in this scene are camera movements, angles, and lighting. A medium close-up shot is dominant in this scene to enhance the message being passed. It involves a small crowd that should appear in the frame, thus using a medium close-up shot. Once Ricci comes closer to the guy calling his name, the shot cuts and jumps into a close-up shot of the two conversing about Ricci's luck and the conditions needed to perform the job, which is a bicycle (Bicycle Thieves, n.d). The close-up shot reinforces the message and shows the seriousness of the job requirements since lack of a bicycle leads to disqualification.
The camera scans through the people when Ricci does not respond after he is called. The purpose of these camera movements is to help the audience spot Ricci. The audience learns that he is not among the crowd when one of the people pushes through the crowd and runs towards Ricci, sitting alone at a distance. The camera then stands far, with Ricci in the middle ground and the crowd in the background. This shot is meant to tell the people about the difference between Ricci's life and those in the crowd. The claim is backed up by the conversation between Ricci and the man when he says he does not have a bicycle, and almost everyone offered to take up the job because they have bicycles. The camera also pans from the crowd following the person who runs to call Ricci. The pan is slow from left to right and is combined with a zoom function. The two techniques take the audience on a journey of Ricci's life of isolation and desperation to get a job.
The scene uses natural lighting from the sunlight. It was acted during daytime as indicated by the glowing walls from sun rays. The shadows of objects are cast on the walls, also showing that the scene utilizes natural light. This enforces the theme of the story, making it a believer because the setting is not manipulated. Scene 1 does not sound like the theme song apart from the dialogue and the ambiance like that of the passing bus. This plays a similar role as the natural lighting by making the scene more real thus believable.
