Title
Factors Affecting Resistance of a Wire
(PE) Personal Engagement
Almost all conductors show opposition to the current flow in one way or the other. This opposition to electricity is known as resistance. The factors that affect the residence of wire are materials (copper’s resistance is far lower than steel), length of the wire (long cables usually have high resistance), the thickness of wires (wires with least diameters have high resistance), and temperature (heating wires can increase their resistance). All these things play a significant role in our day-to-day life and are directly linked to the experiments we carry on in the school, college and university labs (El-Sharkawi, 2014).
(EX) Background Information
The purpose of this lab is to evaluate how electricity flows in different metals. We know that the metal wires are made of various tiny metal crystals in which atoms, molecules, and ions are arranged in a specific pattern. The metals have numerous “free” electrons that don’t restrict themselves to a particular atom or molecule but tend to fill the space between atoms and molecules. The purpose of this lab is to investigate how temperature, thickness or length of a wire affects its resistance to the electric current (Gönen, 2013).
Research Question
Does the length of a wire impact its resistance to the current flow?
Hypothesis
I predict that longer wires impact the resistance to an extent. That’s because free electrons present in long wires bump into more and more atoms, making it tough for the electricity to flow (Gönen, 2013). It’s safe to say that the resistance of a wire is inversely proportional to the area and directly promotional to its length, meaning when we use a lengthy wire, the resistance will definitely increase (El-Sharkawi, 2014).
