Homeostasis is defined as the “the tendency of a system, to maintain internal stability, owing to the coordinated response of its parts to any situation or stimulus that would tend to disturb its normal condition or function”. As the optimal balance for the body's system is important, in most cases the body would tend to elicit responses that help it to return to its optimal conditions. In this laboratory experiment, the researchers tried to measure the body's ability to return to a “relaxed state” after exercising. Particularly speaking, exercises and other strenuous activities do not only consume the body's internal resources. Rather, it also generates heat that is needed to be expelled by the body in order for it to return to a normal rate. This need, together with the increasing requirement of the body for re-oxygenation, is one of the main reasons as to why the heart rate, breathing rate, and pulse rates go higher. The dilation of the blood vessels that help in the dispersion of internal heat also makes the skin red. Nonetheless, in order to measure these more specifically, the researchers would measure the heart rate, breathing rate, perspiration, and level of redness after the exercise. Based on previous ideas on how homeostasis works for the body, the researchers believe that the greater the intensity of the exercise, the more heat the body needs to expel. Thus, this causes an overall increase in heart rate, breathing rate, perspiration and redness (due to the dilation of blood vessels).
Materials Needed: The materials needed for this experiment are:
* Hand-held mirror or phone with a camera
* Timer or stopwatch
To start the experiment, the researchers first readied all the equipment needed and prepared the tables where the results would be categorized. While doing, these certain classifications were made in order to provide a more quantitative description for some of the observations that would be made. In order to classify the sweat, the classifications profusely, average, mild, and none, which ordered from the most to the least was made. As for the redness, the researchers preferred to use the classification based on their observations of strenuous activities.
