The author used both figures and maps to show ethnic groups as they are represented in the various regions of the United States of America. By using the data, he brings out a graphical representation of the distribution that is easily understood by the reader. The maps have been made such that the intensity of the colours used to map out the numbers are of different shades; the more is the intensity, the larger is the population of the ethnic group in that region. When it comes to the appropriateness of these data, it is a clear indication of the US congress behaviour in terms of the influence in Washington, public policy and re-election as influenced by these numbers.
The author provides information that enables the reader to make a sound conclusion when it comes to the behaviour of congress by analysis the underlying factors as shown in the data. It is clearly seen that in an election, the distribution of the voting patterns is influenced by the distribution of the ethnic groups across the states. While most ethnic groups are found in the North Eastern region, other regions have a particular dominant ethnicity residence. This means that in the North East, it becomes tricky to foresee a result prior to the voting and counting of the votes. However, in other regions like the South East, the votes can be assured for an African American candidate such as it was in both the 2008 and 2013 presidential election because an African American population dominates in this region. This is because political candidates usually have the same values as their local electorates. Hence, a representative tends to align him/ her with districts that are in line with the same though such a conservative representative aligning himself with a conservative district.
