According to a CNBC article, "the Constitution includes no mention of abortion, and no such right is implicitly guaranteed by any constitutional clause, including the one on which Roe and Casey's advocates relied." This will ultimately cause Millions of people in the United States are losing the right to an abortion, which was previously protected by the ruling in the Roe v. Wade case. It implies that women in the United States no longer have a constitutionally protected right to abortion and that individual states may outlaw the practice. State-specific bans started immediately after the recent Supreme Court verdict. Thirteen states had previously enacted so-called "trigger laws" that immediately impose a prohibition. The verdict has cheered abortion opponents and infuriated pro-choice activists who have pledged to restore abortion rights in the United States. President Joe Biden called it "a catastrophic miscalculation"(CNN, 2022).
In a 5-4 decision, the Supreme Court reversed Roe v. Wade ruling that was established in 1973 and granted Americans the constitutional right to abortion. Roe has enabled abortions in the United States throughout the first two trimesters of pregnancy. Justice Samuel Alito, supported by four other conservatives, authored the majority opinion (CNBC, 2022). Three liberal justices voted against the judgment. John Roberts, the chief justice, voted with the majority to preserve Mississippi's abortion restrictions, although he did not support overturning Roe.
The article claims that almost half of the states in the United States are expected to follow suit by upholding and implementing the new laws in their respective states immediately, consequently limiting abortion because of the Supreme Court's ruling, which is tied to a new Mississippi legislation that is very stringent.
