Your Media Analysis Memo should be about two pages double-spaced, based on a headline report from Democracy Now!. The purpose of these assignments is to:
Draw connections between course readings and current news stories from Democracy Now!;
Identify key claims and arguments;
Assess what interventions are being made, by whom, and to what ends.
Democracy Now! website: http://www(dot)democracynow(dot)org/. The show and the headlines can be watched, listened to, or read online live at 8am or anytime on demand (with one exception: it takes 1 hour or so after the live broadcast for it to be available on demand).
After watching, listening to, or reading the headlines, you will write a two-page memo on one of the major stories from the headline report. The memo should include the following:
SUMMARY of the report (clear and concise)
CONNECTION to course material (i.e., connections to *two* readings and/or videos)
REFLECTION on the story based on your own experiences and observations of the social world

Article: "Women! Life! Freedom!" Iranian Women Lead Nationwide Protests After Death of Mahsa Amini
Summary
This video presents an analysis of the current situation in Iran following the nationwide protests by women protesting the killing of Mahsa Amini. Amini died at the hands of Iranian police after she was arrested and beaten into a coma by morality police for leaving part of her hair exposed against the country's laws that require women to cover their hair fully. In this talk show, the hosts are Amy Goodman and Juan Gonzales, while the guest is Hoda Katebi. Katebi is an Iranian American writer and thus has vast knowledge about the issue under discussion (Democracy Now!, 2022).
The protests in Iran are led by women and supported by men. They are demanding freedom of choice and association. The government has imposed a rule that discriminates against them. This rule is supposed to be a national symbol, but it has been implemented on women's bodies, and they need freedom. Katebi is glad that women are leading these protests and notes that Iranian women have been leading revolutionary protests in the country (Democracy Now!, 2022).
Katebi also talks about the government's strategy to turn the protest into a religious instead of a social issue. According to the Iranian government, the protests are against Muslims. However, the reality is that the protests are a call for women to get freedom and liberty like other people in Iran, the kind of freedom they enjoy when they are away from their country Iran.

The content in this show relates to various course content we have studied. For a long time, women have been discriminated against. The pre-colonial and colonial America is a perfect example. Women were not allowed to own wealth and were subordinate to men (Gilley, 2017). Most of them were housewives, only working on house chores.
