The Importance of Academic Integrity
Academic writing is unique compared to other forms of writing because it has guidelines that guide it. As the name suggests, it is based on academic guidelines and is only shared with the public after assessing and certified by an authority, an accredited University, and qualified professors. An academic writer always has to research their topic, get all facts correct, and support their opinions using credible information. Learning academic writing has helped me know how to express my views backed up by credible sources, respect timeliness in research, use feedback and revision positively, and enhance my competency in analyzing texts according to English discipline conventions.
After learning this course, the first personal goal I met was the importance of academic integrity. Most topics have been researched in the past, and any new information builds up the knowledge in the particular topic. When researching, academic researchers base their opinions on a particular topic on prior research work available in academic libraries available online and in physical learning institutions' libraries. Using these sources means that one confirms or rejects their opinions by referencing findings from other researchers. Based on this lesson from the course, I learned to back up my writing using credible sources by either confirming or rejecting my claim. Additionally, I learned that academic integrity involves using credible sources to back up my research work. I have learned to avoid information posted on blogs, news sources, and people's opinions on social media.
