The book written by Selahattin Demirtas titled Dawn presents the persona of women as victims of various challenges that continue to struggle and fight head-on. Inspiring as it is, the clarity of every women’s bravery and independence can be seen in the author’s story. This paper will present how Demitras showcased the ability and capability of women, regardless of age and circumstances.
The first story The Man Inside is a relatively short but appealing story that captures the image of a brave and courageous woman who would do anything for the sake of their home. The story started with a man narrating about his life in the courtyard where he found a bird couple building their own nest. The story progressed as the man and the female bird communicated with each other and concluded when the bird couple was in a bad situation because of the Chief bird and only the female bird fought through it. The story was a fable with personified animals of a hardworking and brave woman represented as the mother bird. The evidence of this would be, “Needless to say, and it was the female who did most of the work.” (Demirtas, 2017, p. 33), which makes the narrator a witness of how it is only the female bird was the sole reason why their home was built. While in the scenario where the Chief bird, which can be represented as the people who discriminate women as fragile and weak, was interrogating the bird’s nest, the female bird stated, “‘Take my home? Take my baby? Over my dead body!’” (Demirtas, 2017, p. 35). With her words, it is safe to say that the female bird, despite being in a situation that concerns her life, would prefer to take the path of saving her children instead of herself. That despite the Chief bird threatening her ability and worth, she would hold her head up and fight for her rights. On the other hand, when the male bird stated, “‘Please, kind sir,’ he groveled, ‘please, would you stop? Wait a minute, sir, there’s no need for a fuss. Two chicks are one too many for us anyway.” (Demirtas, 2017, p. 36) represents the idea that he was a coward and no man can be seen within himself. Thus, the author concludes in this particular story that women are braver and more courageous than men from this point.
While Seher, on the other hand, is a tragic story of a woman who was robbed of justice and was forced to a corner. The story was about the female protagonist, Seher, a loving daughter to her parents and a caring sister. Despite her age, she was a woman who had yet to experience the joy of love in her life. This factor led her to a man whom she thought was trustworthy but then betrayed her in the end. Seher was raped by three men and was left out cold in the forest after what happened. The story ended tragically as Seher was both robbed of her dreams, dignity, and life. The scenarios where she comforted her mother and sisters, gracefully followed her father and brothers, and hugged and kissed them while asking for forgiveness present the image of her braveness despite knowing what would come to her in the end.
