Screenwriter Aaron Sorkin and director David Fincher’s 2010 film The Social Network tells the somewhat fictionalized origin story of Facebook. It also, in many ways, tells a story about America. The movie grossed $97 million during its US theatrical run and was nominated for Best Picture, making it a national pop culture icon in its own right. Using at least one text from our last unit (see the list below) as well as at least one additional course text of your choosing—this means that I assigned it for homework and it is on the course reader—write an essay that determines the vision of America that The Social Network communicates.
In responding to this prompt, consider whether this vision is positive or negative (if there’s a value judgment at all) and which dynamics are most significant to your argument (economic, racial, gendered, generational, etc).
Texts to choose from
“From the Instamatic to Instagram: Social Media and the Secret Lives of Teenagers” by Nancy Jo Sales
“The Evolution of #Black Twitter” by S. Craig Watkins
“Slactivism: Raising Awareness” by Brian Dunning
“Black Code: Surveillance, Privacy, and the Dark Side of the Internet” by Ronald J. Deibert
Be sure that your essay includes a thesis statement that directly and specifically responds to the prompt. Organize your paper carefully, making sure that paragraphs are guided by topic sentences, and support your claims with specific textual evidence.
Your essay must:
Be 5-6 pages in 12 point font
Be double-spaced (no extra spaces between paragraphs)
Include the honor pledge

The vision of America based on The Social Network film
Introduction
The invention of the Instamatic camera brought selfies and amateur photography into the hands of all people. Instamatic camera focused on making the mindset believe that “cameras are tools for creating an idealized self.” Zuckerberg in the Social Network picked this concept and turned it into a female-dominated online platform called Facebook. The emergence of smart-phones explored this concept to the limit and made it a significant part of teenagers’ lives. Currently, it is truly amazing how Instamatic cameras and Facebook create an imaginary world for teens, especially young girls, based on blatant lies. Despite the greatness of this fantasy, Facebook, Instamatic cameras, and Instagram promote a society that exercises bias against women, invades privacy, and establishes conditions where privacy cannot be regulated.
Gender bias
While other people believe that the robust democracy in the United States gives women a significant position in the society, gender issues raised in The Social Network and “From Instamatic to Instagram: Social Media and the Secret Lives of Teenagers suggest otherwise. In the two materials, beauty and attractiveness in women are presented as being more important than their talent, skills, or capabilities. For instance, after breaking with Erica, Zuckerberg wrote insulting words about her in his live journal blog and established a website (Facemash) where male students were required to rate girls depending on their beauty. This trend is very prevalent today, where women are paraded on Facebook, and inappropriate comments such as “looking sexy” are tagged along with their images. Interestingly, with all the abuse that is directed towards them, Sales indicate that young girls cannot live without texting because it is like someone constantly tapping you on the shoulder, and you are obliged to respond (p 61).
Other than sexually inappropriate comments, Facebook provides a platform where cyber-bullying and social exclusion prevails. Again, girls are more often victims than boys in both cyber-bullying and related self-harm. Most of the cyber-bullying that occurs focuses on insults directed towards “promiscuity or perceived promiscuity” and the girl’s bodily form (Sales, p 129). In recent times, cyber-bullying has taken a more aggressive style. For instance, girls would be excluded from events or parties due to their physical appearances, and that exclusion will be made a public exhibition by posting a group picture on Facebook and Instagram. Therefore, it is not surprising that girls suffer extreme mental anguish from the drama that unfolds on Facebook and Instagram. To cope up with the bullies, young girls have adopted face reconstructive surgery to please boys and men. Therefore, it is impossible to create a positive vision for the American society when young girls know the dangers of fake identity but still hold onto social media dearly.
Privacy
Although technology and the internet have taken interactions to a higher level, society must respect the privacy of people for a positive vision to emerge. In contrast, both Nancy Sales and ...
