Tips for Writing this Paper:

Argumentation:

  • Remember: this is not JUST a basic research paper; this is an ARGUMENT paper. That means that you are using research to form an argument and to persuade your readers.

  • You can use a mix of popular and peer-reviewed sources (you need a minimum of 3 peer-reviewed articles, though). Make sure you evaluate the credibility of all popular sources in particular!

Paper Structure:

  • There is no one structure for writing and developing an argument paper; however, all papers will include some kind of background information on the topic, argumentative points, and at least one counterargument.

  • The amount of background information you give is dependent on your topic—is your topic very common to most people? Or do you need to explain it more so that people understand the issue?

  • Remember that your goal is to persuade your audience of your point of view. Therefore, you have to consider how to logically set up your information so that the reader can follow your argument and so that one point builds off another.

  • A counterargument is when you consider your opposition. If you believe that marijuana should be fully legalized throughout the U.S., who would disagree with you and what would they say? What is THEIR argument? At some point in your paper, you need to reference this and respond to it.

  • The counterargument should be at least one solid paragraph, but it could potentially be longer. You just don’t want to have a paper that feels like it covers as many counterarguments as it does arguments—that won’t feel very persuasive at all!

  • As always, use transitions to make sure that your paper flows and clearly connects from one point to the next!

  • Researching:
  • Maintain a folder/file where you keep good track of any potential sources for your paper

  • As you read your sources, think about how they might fit into your paper: will you use them in the background section, as part of your argument, or as a counterargument?

  • Remember that you should only quote from a source when quoting adds some kind of value to your paper! All other information should be summarized or paraphrased!

  • Cite your sources AS YOU GO. If you do it this way, you have a much smaller chance of plagiarizing, accidentally or otherwise. If you end up not using a source, remember to remove it from your bibliography!

  • If you are getting stuck or can’t find the kind of research you are looking for, see a librarian! They are happy to help and they will help you to avoid wasting your time!

  • Tone/Point of View:
  • This paper should be written in 3rd person point of view, which is more formal and academic. Though it may sound difficult, it’s actually not that hard to avoid using “I.” If you get stuck, review the models I’ve provided again.

  • Your tone should be appropriate—you want to sound fair and logical, not overly biased, passionate, angry, etc. This has to do with the words you choose and the way you frame your information.

  • To be clear about your counterargument, it’s helpful to use language like “others believe that” or “some people may think,” etc.

In the digital era where there is increased online contact the spatial boundaries between people, but electronic communication and cyber bullying has increased its presence. Online access and use increases our exposure to cyber bullying and violence. Online cyber bullies target an individual or group of people who cannot easily defend themselves. Since cyber bullying is exercised through a virtual space the anonymity of the cyber bullies makes it more challenging to expose them (Jacobs, 2019). Victim of cyberbullying are easy targets for the cyber bullies since the attackers may focus on constant and almost uncontrollable attacks. Cyberbullying affects victims and perpetrators and hurts, whereby without prevention and intervention there will be more negative impact in various societies.
Adolescents are one group at high risk of cyber bullying as they tend to spend more time online, and this mostly leaves victims feeling helpless reported angry, frustrated, sad or even depressed as a in some cases some victims abuse drugs/ alcohol develop social anxiety and serious emotional problems. There has been increased focus on the impact of online hate on teenagers and young people in high profile cases where seemingly well adjusted teenagers have committed suicide because of cyberbullying (Harrison, 2013). Furthermore, there may be deterioration in quality of the teenagers’ relationship with their parents and peers parents at home, lower school performance, lower level of self-esteem and in extreme cases severe depression or even suicidal ideation (Brewer & Kerslake, 2015).
Victims who feel shame are more likely to suffer in silence, and for the perpetrators who feel in control bullying continue to the point of escalating harassment by trying to influence others to engaging bullying activities. There is risk of high levels of psychological distress over a short period of time for some of the victims of cyber bullying, and without adequate social support the risk of elf harming increases (Harrison, 2013). This is further complicated when there is normalization of cyber bullying behavior that there is low empathy for cyber bullying victims. Given the effects of cyberbullying it is important to educate young people, on the dangers of cyber bulling and combat cyberbullying.
The convenience of online communication allows cyberbullying to affect people constantly because bullying can happen any time unlike physical bullying that occurs at only certain points in time. Cyberbullying is a social problem that has emotional or social and behavioral impact on the victims and as young people is at greater risk of cyberbullying. Harrison (2013) points out that there is an assumption that only certain youngsters are susceptible to cyber bullying, which partly explains why it is challenging to reduce the incidence of cyberbullying.
Sometimes cyberbullying is a form of gender-based violence and this is mostly in cases of sexism and power dominance that are perpetuated via information technologies. Girls are more likely to suffer from low self-esteem, depression and suicidal thoughts when they are cyberbullying victims. Some researchers consider the perpetrator's so...
