Background

One of the guiding principles of this course, and the practice of history in general, is summed up in Shakespeare's phrase, “What is past is prologue." Current events not only emerge out of traceable historical developments and changes over time, but our perceptions and abilities to describe events and contemporary environments, conditions, and politics are shaped by history and popular stories of the past. This assignment asks you to consider the historical frames and developments shaping a current event and the reporting of it.

The white house is being prepared for a missile test from North Korea herby as Joe Biden is on an international trip heading to Japan, which is slated to begin on Friday. The president's visits to South Korea and Japan are intended to be peaceful trips. He will ask the countries not to launch missile tests as the pandemic is still undergoing, and the launch could also be imminent. This is brought about due to South Korea's suspicions that the north may have completed the preparations for a missile launch and may now only be waiting for the ideal moment to carry it out. "Our intelligence does reflect the genuine possibility that there will be either a further missile test, including long-range missile test, or a nuclear test, or frankly both in the days leading up to, during, or after the president's trip to the region," Jake Sullivan, the national security adviser, told reporters on Wednesday (Borger, 2022).
