Economists constantly discuss the causes of the Great Depression and government-initiated efforts to address it. One thing remains clear. Few political leaders and economists at the time comprehended what was transpiring and what to do about it. This paper argues that the Great Depression emanated from the 1929 stock market crash. Roosevelt’s executive orders helped mitigate the adverse impact of the economic crisis. Ultimately, the New Deal programs helped end the Great Depression.
The Great Depression began following the United States (U.S.) stock market crash in 1929, which caused a drastic decline in shareholder wealth by millions of dollars. In the subsequent years, investment and consumer spending patterns plummeted sharply, leading to severe deterioration in production capacities and employment as closing companies cut down on their human resources. By 1933, the Great Depression recorded its lowest downturn, leaving roughly fifteen million Americans jobless amid the failure of several banks (Monadjemi and Lodewijks 32).
