Introduction
Mental heal problems such as depression are common among youths. However, it is far more severe for LGBTQ youths. In 2021, approximately 69% of LGBTQ youths, compared to 35% of heterosexual youths, reported symptoms of depression (CDC, 2023). These symptoms included feeling hopeless and sad. As seen in Kevin Millard’s case (refer to vital health scenarios), LGBTQ teens experience more violence compared to their heterosexual peers. For instance, they experience more episodes of bullying, threats, and incurring injuries (CDC, 2023). As a result, these youths/teens are burdened by depression and other mental health concerns. Therefore, healthcare policies that seek to improve the outcomes of depression among LGBTQ youths/teens should be established.
Policy Proposal and Guidelines
The proposed policy is to ensure access to evidence-based care for LGBTQ youths/teens. There exist disparities in care access for LGBTQ people that lead to poor outcomes, especially in youths/teens with depression (CDC, 2023). These teens/youths face discrimination and stigma that demotivates them to seek help for depression. Breaking all barriers to healthcare access for these youths/teens would significantly improve the outcome and quality of care.
Policy guidelines that would improve access to evidence-based care include the prevention of bans on efforts geared toward gender-affirming care (GAC). GAC leads to numerous health benefits among LGBTQ youths/teens, including reduced episodes of depression and decreased suicide risk (SAMHSA, 2022). Withholding GAC may be detrimental to the mental health of these youths and teens. Bans on GAC conflict with access to evidence-based care and ethical guidelines and standards for professional healthcare providers.
Establishing anti-discrimination policies is another guideline that would improve access to evidence-based care. Discrimination policies may include those that promote school-based bullying, exclusion from class activities, and severe prejudice on important matters based on sexual orientation (SAMHSA, 2022). Policies that sanction discrimination against these youths/teens negatively affect their mental and behavioral health, including worsening depression to the point of suicide risk and attempt. Antidiscrimination policies would improve the mental and behavioral health of LGBTQ youths/teens. Additionally, they would protect LGBTQ youths/teens from discrimination and allow them to thrive in terms of access to evidence-based care.
Another policy guideline towards improving access to evidence-based care is training and educating healthcare professionals. Such training would equip them with the skills necessary to work with and support LBGTQ youths/teens, which would lead to improved care. Such training generally includes the provision of resources and practice guidelines on the treatment of depression and other mental health illnesses among LGBTQ youth/teens (SAMHSA, 2022). The aftermath is improved professional competence in providing care for these youths, which leads to improved access to evidence-based care.
Several potential challenges exist in the implementation of the policy. These incl...
