For this assessment, pretend you are a member of an interprofessional team that is attempting to improve the quality and outcomes of health care in a vulnerable population. For the first step in your team's work, you have decided to conduct an analysis of current position papers that address the issue and population you are considering.

In your analysis, you will note the team's initial views on the issue in the population as well as the views across a variety of relevant position papers. You have been tasked with finding the most current standard of care or evidenced-based practice and evaluating both the pros and cons of the issue. For the opposing viewpoints, it is important to discuss how the team could respond to encourage support. This paper will be presented to a committee of relevant stakeholders from your care setting and the community. If it receives enough support, you will be asked to create a new policy that could be enacted to improve the outcomes related to your chosen issue and target population.

The care setting, population, and health care issue that you use for this assessment will be used in the other assessments in this course. Consider your choice carefully. Use the vila health scenario to complete work.

You may use one of the issues and populations presented in the Vila Health: Health Challenges in Different Populations media piece. For this approach, you may consider the population in the context of the Vila Health care setting

  1. You may select a population and issue that is of interest to you and set them in the context of your current or desired future care setting. While you are free to choose any population of interest, the issue you choose should fall within one of the following broad categories:
  • Addiction.
    • Abuse of alcohol, prescription drugs, tobacco, illegal substances.
    • Emotion and mental health.
      • Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), depression, eating disorders, psychosis.

Teens and youths are prone to experiencing increased stress levels and depression as they try to become aware of their identity and fit into peer groups. However, Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Queer (LGBTQ) teens and youths are at a higher risk of depression due to a lack of acceptance and discrimination in society. Kevin Millard’s scenario is one such case, where he was bullied at school due to his LGBTQ stance. He explains that he feels misunderstood by his teacher Mr. Rossum and his parents. He feels alone and thinks ill of himself since everyone seems to be against him. In regard to Kevin’s case, the healthcare issue of concern for the analysis of position will be Depression among LGBTQ teens/youths.
Position with regard to Health Outcomes for Depression among LGBTQ Teens/Youths
Depression is common among teens and youths as they strive to find their identities and fit in. However, it is greater in LGBTQ teens compared to non-LGBTQ teens. Depression is likely to increase suicidal thoughts among these teens since they face discrimination, increased prejudice, denial of their human and civil rights, and judgment everywhere and often feel alone (Hatchel et al., 2018). Today, LGBTQ people are increasingly rising and accepting their identities, unlike traditionally, when one hid beneath their coats for fear of being shamed or even harmed by society.
Despite the healthcare disparities against the LGBTQ community, healthcare providers should strive to maintain an open mind without implicit preference for non-LGBTQ people. Additionally, one major value of work that these providers should uphold is cultural sensitivity. However, the current state of healthcare for depression among these teens entails traumatic experiences that trigger and increase the risk for other mental disorders. The aftermath is increased hospital stays and increased hospital charges. It is not unusual to find healthcare providers denying them care or using harsh words. Eventually, these people develop a stigma that prevents them from seeking adequate healthcare for their mental health.
To improve the care and outcome of depression among LGBTQ teens, routine screening for depression should be done through psychiatric assessments. Routine screening would lead to early diagnosis and treatment of the condition. Secondly, mental health professionals should help LGBTQ teens and youths improve their socialization, cope with their challenges and solve their problems. Thirdly, psychotherapy should be continued to help them cope with the stigma related to interpersonal issues, conflicts, psychosocial issues, and family-related challenges (Gower et al., 2018). Supportive psychotherapy should be administered as a standard treatment for mild-to-moderate depression. Supportive psychotherapy includes cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) or psychodynamic therapy. It is important to act on this position since it will reduce the cases of severe depression among LGBTQ youths and enable them to cope and develop problem-solving skills.
