In the United States, the federal government is not the key stakeholder in the healthcare sector; there are numerous private organizations that are keen on ensuring that they benefit from gaps in the healthcare reforms taking place in the health sector. It is necessary to note that the private investors influence the United States Congress to make sure that their interests are safeguarded during the efforts to implement reforms to the healthcare field, and people whose intents are to change the situation in the healthcare have faced resistance from Big Pharma as well as the government. President Trump has made pledges which are aimed at making changes in healthcare to protect the interests of the patients; for instance, the president is keen on reducing the drugs costs. The literature examines the pharmaceutical policy reforms, drug pricing system, the high costs of prescription drugs, and the promises of the president to deal with drug prices.
In the United States, it is the responsibility of Congress to ensure that effective and workable reforms are developed and implemented to control and regulate the activities of pharmaceutical industries. For example, the changes in Medicare programs in 2003 introduced insurance of pharmaceuticals by the government.
The drug pricing system used in the United States has proved to be ineffective; the pills which may cost pennies to manufacture end up costing thousands of dollars at purchase. The non-interference clause prevents the government from discussing and negotiating the prices of drugs in the United States. The system of pricing drugs in the United States consider numerous factors, such as the research approach and manufacturing methods used on pharmaceutical products. Additionally, there are numerous layers of pricing that have been established between the manufacturers and consumers, and this tends to increase drug costs before they are received by the intended patients (Axene Health Partners, 2019). Additionally, brand-name manufactures also influence the prices of drugs (Ellis, 2019). When the producers are given patent rights, they take advantage of increasing the prices without examining the value provided to the patients.
