The human gastrointestinal tract starts from the mouth to the anus. Food is processed through the organs in the tract from intake to excretion after the last stage of digestion. According to Bornhorst et al. (2016), the process allows the breaking of food into small particles by the tongue to enhance swallowing for a transition into the next step. Bornhorst et al. (2016) claim that the ingested food particles pass through the esophagus into the stomach. The movement of the bolus through the esophagus is enhanced by muscular contractions (Bornhorst et al., 2016). The peristaltic pumping through the muscles in the organ facilitates smooth motion to avoid painful contacts in the track. The stomach (J-shaped) is the storage area of the digestive system (Bornhorst et al., 2016). The bolus is mixed with gastric secretions such as mucus and enzymes in the stomach. Bornhorst et al. (2016) argue that the mixing enhances processes like PH distribution and activation of gastric enzymes. For instance, the PH of the bolus is reduced to approximately two to pave the way for a compelling continuation of the digestion process. The stomach's mixing process plays a vital role in the digestive system since the breaking down of the remaining food particles into the bolus takes place in the organ.
The bolus particles enter the small intestines at the end of the stomach. The pylorus tract between the two organs sieves the particles to ensure they are approximately 1mm before entry into the small intestines (Bornhorst et al., 2016). Bornhorst et al. (2016) claim that digested food (chyme) is mixed with intestinal secretions to enhance nutrient absorptions from the abdominal wall. The process propagates in a similar process with the mixing in the stomach.
