Hegemony of Play
Fron et al. (2007) suggest that the current video game industry has ignored the interests of “non-gamers” and women. I find this thesis to be true. The reason is that the history of gaming clearly shows that we are all gamers. Due to advancements in computer technology, however, industry players have chosen to promote the idea of ‘’gamers.” This, in turn, has left out a large portion of the population with no interesting games.
I find no evidence that the thesis of the paper is incorrect. Even though first-hand observation, one can tell that the research presented by Fron et al. (2007) is accurate. If anything, the entrenched status quo of the gaming industry is forcing people to choose whether they are gamers or not. In a society where games are viewed as part of childhood behavior, this has left many without the freedom to express themselves fully.
