Is Donating Organs Morally Justified?
My objective in answering the question, Is donating organs morally justified is to consider the problem of justice and the distribution of organs for transplantation. Many areas of concern will emerge in this essay as I attempt to show what a just distributional system would be. I will show why the human body cannot be understood simply as a useful resource; why it must be treated as an extension of an autonomous agent instead of merely as property. In order to shed light on the question of the allocation of human donor organs, I will show that donor organs can be founded on an understanding of justice as altruistic reciprocity. By uniting the question of who shall receive organs with the question of who is willing to donate organs, I will tie together the common concerns of a community which desires to benefit from important advancements in medical care.
