Introduction
Social imagination as viewed by C. Mills describes the quality of mind that gives an individual the opportunity to relate history and biography and the interactions between these two factors with the society (Andreev, 2008). According to Mills, the variables between effective sociology and thought and the thought which fails is rested upon imagination. Sociological thought in this case is something that is limited to sociology and is an exercise that individuals attempt.
Mills alleged that sociological research is guided more by a required administrative concern than intellectual views. This therefore means that this element it is guided by an accumulation of facts that purposefully facilitates administrative decisions. However, to fulfill the functions of sociological imagination there is a need of focusing on the substantive problem and to relate such problems to the historical and structural features of a social system (Andreev, 2008). These features are the makers of meaning for individuals since they affect their character, values, and their behaviors that make up a social system. This paper therefore aims at developing a Sociological Autobiography that describes the interaction between my biography and history under the lenses of social imagination as termed by C. Wright Mills.
My Autobiography
To begin with, it is essential to mention that the theory of social imagination can facilitate me in associating my own life experiences with history that is coupled with social, economic and political forces (Barnetz, 2015). The concept of social imagination as described by Mills requires that the life of any individual and history of the society may not be understood unless these two elements are understood.
I have always discovered my dream job since I was young. I have always wanted to be a writer and this I came to notice when I was a child and the manner in which I fell in love and interacted with pens and papers. I, therefore, undertook courses that would spur my knowledge in this field and engaged myself in school workshops, a factor that saw me write materials for my local high school (Barnetz, 2015). After my graduation from high school, my focus changed into making money and went to work with this aim thus forgetting my dream in wiring. This, however, never took long until I got an opportunity to join college where I realized that I needed to work extra hard to make money as I had thought before. I, therefore, needed a college degree in something that was practical and that would also give me time in pursuing my writing dream.
In college, I tried to major on a study with the focus of making money still in mind since I thought it was better doing something that would make me happy. I was very determined to follow my passion, a factor that saw me pick Broadcast Journalism since this would aid my writing skills, a factor that would help me in doing something I loved which in my view was interacting with people through storytelling (Dowell, 2006).
