The article “Escaping the 'Evil Avenger' and the 'Supercrip': Images of Disability in Popular Television” was written by Alison Hartnett. The author argued pointed out is underrepresentation of people with disabilities in Irish films and television. The people living with disability are portrayed negatively with representations mainly focusing on stereotypes and the general public gets used to this depiction through the media.
One new concept is re-presenting reality, which means portraying reality by conveying the representation of the real world in the mass media. Television mediates how people think about themselves and there is more focus on disability and not the complete personality of the disabled characters (Hartnett 26). Additionally, there is typicality where individuals are shown as being typical of a group and there is stereotyping (Hartnett 26).
The author points out that there is negative representation of disabled people in mass media. As such, her positionality influences her writing as she looked into ways through which the portrayal of people with disabilities reflected negative images. In any case, the media speaks for the disabled who have no independent voice of their own to speak about themselves. Hartnett targets the mass media, viewers and disability scholars since she mentions that representation of disabled people is problematic, and it is the televisions that are most responsible for not favoring disability in their depictions.
