There are five faces of oppression which include cultural imperialism, violence, marginalization, exploitation, and powerlessness as put across by Iris Marion Young. Some of these faces, such as exploitation and marginalization, are relevant and relate to redlining in various ways. Exploitation refers to the act of mistreating someone in order to benefit from their work. Exploitation in the five faces of oppression illustrates the structural relation between various races. The structural relations bring about exploitation as Young says in the, “Five Faces of Oppression” that, “these relations are produced and reproduced through a systematic process in which the energies of the have-nots are continuously expended to maintain and augment the power, status, and wealth of the haves,” (Young 14). Here, the results of the labor of the inferior/minority race benefit the superior race.
On the other hand, marginalization refers to the treatment of a person or group as insignificant. According to Young, this is the most dangerous form of expression because it eliminates a specific race from being useful in society. In the United States, a large number of people are marginalized based on their races, especially Black Americans and Latino Americans (Young 17). Also, marginalization involves denying of institutionalized, practical, and cultural conditions for exercising capacities, such as interaction and recognition.
