This is a piece in which the author introduces the topic on the image that is associated with prosthetics. The author is trying to create a new identity that artistic in the way that people are able to view enhanced body parts.
Thesis
In the article, the author brings out one of the controversial topics in the sense that not many people consider prosthetics as art. There is a certain level of bias that is associated with the symmetry especially when it comes to the beauty standards. This is to mean that, for most of the people, they view disability as a form if discord from the norm. The author is trying to give meaning to the body types of the disabled in their various forms that are not symmetrical (Neicu). More importantly, they go further into combining the artistic nature of the bodies and the technological enhancements that are the prosthetics. The author’s main idea revolves around creating an open transdisciplinary debate surrounding the controversial topic and brining out elements of autonomy, beauty and normality. The author is also looking to breaks away from the social narrative of identity and frame it around the technological development associated with the creation of the poly-semantic concepts. It is more of bridging the gap between social norms, art and the technology that is associated with the creation of the prosthetics.
