Charles Perrault’s Bluebeard is a story about a wealthy Frenchman who owned a Bluebeard and forbade any woman from finding and looking at the bird. The man was ugly and women him, while he was in the habit of murdering women. While Blue beard is wealthy, he is also evil as he created a secret bloody chamber room where he kills women who discover his secret. The murderous husband expected his young bride to be obedient and not show any signs of disloyalty when he told her not to go to the secret chamber house. Forging marriage ties to families of high wealth and rank was encouraged, and Blue birds’ wealth makes him stand out as he was expected to marry a high-ranking lady (Fowler 75). Blue beard’s young bride discovers the secret chamber, and after using a magical key, he sought to kill her. There is an analysis of values within the culture, value orientations, and socialization development types applicable to Bluebeard.
In the cultural narrative, the motivational function is applicable as there is a focus on norms and messages on expectations in the imagined community. The motivational function highlights the way people are motivated and incentivized to appeal to ambitions and expectations and rewarded for this (Ting-Toomey and Chung42). The Bluebeard man is singled out as a wealthy man in the story’s first few lines. As such, society prioritizes wealth and status and especially among men. Typically the rich men were more desirable among the young women, but the character in the story was ugly and strange. However, wealth is not everything if the person lacks a moral character.
