ENGAGING MILLER’S SOCIOLOGICAL IMAGINATION IN MY UNIVERSITY ENROLLMENT
A normal person has a narrow life to have a concise and clear comprehension of today’s complicated social world. Many people spend their daily living with family and friends, at play or at work, and surfing the internet or watching TV. There is no way an individual can get a bigger picture from their lonely lives. Countless events, many internet information sources, numerous interpersonal interactions and many communities exist without one knowing they exist. Many people do not know how to make sense of all these. But, Mill’s sociological imagination provides the framework for comprehending the social world that surpasses our imagination that can be gotten from the restricted social stance. Mills outlines personal challenges (troubles) and large social challenges (issues) as the main principles for offering a framework for actually wrapping the mind on the numerous unidentified social processes that occur in unseen ways in the current society (Mills,1959). Troubles involve choices about school, work, groups, family, friend and other issues that we can control. On the other hand, issues involve issues that we cannot control like processes and organizations.
I present the changes in my life, especially the one that enabled me to join Rutgers University. Mills outlines the sociological imagination as an ability to view the relation among one’s life and the impacts of the large social forces. The dictum allows me to comprehend the big scenes based on meaning for inner life. It enables me to account how my daily experience always becomes conscious of my social position.
I have been impacted by Mills from my early life but it is recently that I have involved Mill’s dictum conscientiously and fully in my life. One way to assist me identify the outside forces that impacted my enrollment in Rutgers is to establish the reason I joined.
I joined Rutgers to learn and earn a degree. The society is growingly credentialed. The professional bodies, deans, accrediting organizations and the university define what is required to be awarded a degree which is a certificate that is a cultural symbol of distinction and legitimation to assist arrange people into categories.
