INTRODUCTION TO SOCIOLOGY/PAPER ASSIGNMENT
We began our time together watching “The Lottery of Birth” and questioning the notion that “everything you know is wrong.” Take some time to consider the following statements from the film…
“The knowledge we possess and the values we hold emerge from the interactions between our cognitive architecture and our experiences.”
“Just as it’s important to study the history of your society, of your culture, of your nation, I think it also useful to study your own history…your own personal history. As an individual, you have had a very limited set of experiences, and the limitation of your experiences may have set limitations on your thinking…may have narrowed your thinking. And to recognize these limitations, to recognize that you may have been limited by your family, by your education, by your church, by the class in which you were born, to recognize the limitations of your personal experience is to then enable you, perhaps, to go beyond those limitations.”
In a 1-2 page paper discuss how your own personal history has shaped your view on something you experienced in your everyday life. Over the course of the semester, have you recognized any limitations in your thinking regarding this experience? In other words, did you interpret the experience differently than you may have before discovering the sociological perspective?
THIS IS A SOCIOLOGY PAPER. DON’T FORGET TO USE THE SOCIOLOGICAL PERSPECTIVE AS WELL AS TERMS, CONCEPTS & THEORIES WHERE APPROPRIATE.
THIS IS AN INFORMAL REFLECTION PAPER…NO RESEARCH IS REQUIRED.
THE PAPER SHOULD STEM FROM THE MICRO-PERSPECTIVE (SYMBOLIC INTERACTION WORKS WELL WITH THE ASSIGNMENT).

Symbolic Interactionism
For an individual to understand his or her origin well, one must study the history of one’s culture, religion, society, and ethnicity. However, only a few individuals are concerned to know their personal histories. The place, social class, education, church, and family where a person was born and raised can limit his or her thinking. As such, comprehending one’s history enables an individual to overcome the barrier of limited thinking. In my case, studying my personal history would help me to understand my strengths and weaknesses in face-to-face interactions in an era where technology is killing physical relationships gradually.
Symbolic interactionism enables an individual to understand how different groups of people interact using symbols and their face-to-face interactions. Max Weber was not wrong when he said that people act depending on how they interpret the world around them. In other words, the sociologist meant that how individuals interact with others is significantly affected by the things they come across when growing up. People are the ones who attach meanings to specific symbols. These signs shape the social world since they are used by individuals while communicating. As such, the lack of proper comprehension of symbols might hinder a person from effective face-to-face interactions. Different groups of people use distinct signs to pass messages. Besides, similar symbols might have completely different meanings depending on their contexts. For this reason, studying one’s personal history helps an individual to understand symbols, hence improving face-to-face interaction.
Sociology has helped me to overcome barriers to the physical relationship that were caused by the lack of comprehension of various symbols. Indeed, having been brought up in the digital era, I missed several things about my community, which I have managed to learn by studying my personal history. Fo...
