Journals reflect on assigned course readings (i.e. not your opinion, lectures, or PowerPoint slides,). You may reflect on one or multiple readings in each journal, and you may choose the readings. Each journal is worth 6 points, corresponding to 6% of your final grade. Journal reflections are designed to: 1. Show that you are reading and understanding assigned readings from class 2. Demonstrate critical and reflective thinking on sociological topics 3. Assessment Assessment is based on six points distributed between three required sections, and formatting: 1. Formatting: Correctly formatted and accurate citations and reference page (1 pt) 2. Summary: Summary of the main sociological arguments/points presented in the reading (2 pts) 3. Reflection: Critical reflection of main arguments and ideas from the reading (2 pts) 4. Sociological Imagination and You: Using your sociological imagination, describe how the ideas/arguments from the reading connect to your own experiences and perspective the “sociological imagination” is applied (1 pt) You must fully respond to each of the three sections (Summary, Reflection, and Sociological Imagination and You). Your reflection should include headings for each of the three sections, and 1-2 paragraphs for each section. You do not need to include a formal introduction or a conclusion paragraph. Whenever you reference a specific idea or quote from a course reading, you must include an in-text citation that looks like this: (Gamble 2006) or (Introduction to Sociology 2013:444). You must provide a full reference for every reading you discuss in a separate reference page at the end of your reflection. The book Introduction to sociology describes education as a long term activity that starts immediately after the birth of a child. The learning process of gaining education changes through different levels of growth to the final formality and facts introduced at school. The book reveals the close relationship between the formal education to the various social norms learned through teachers, various readings and interaction with classmates. The knowledge achieved in school impacts learners by helping them in breaking various issues distracting their relationships with other people (OpenStax College, 2012). Although different countries engage various systems of education, the aim of being in school is to learn and acquire knowledge on certain issues surrounding the development and growth of the learner.
The book gives two types of education including formal and non-formal education. In the formal context, students learn the basic academic concepts while the non-formal education entails the societal incarnation of norms and beliefs regarding the settings of certain communities. The informal education concentrates on the various expectations of conduct in society through the observance of cultural practices and norms. Also, cultural transmission occurs when people learn the values, social norms and beliefs of their culture of origin. Universal access to education has become a major challenge globally as most countries can't offer equality in education (OpenStax College, 2012). Education is guided by three theoretical perspectives that work together to enhance efficiency in the system. While functionalism views education as an important aspect in the society as it equips people with knowledge and skills to perform different roles in society, conflict theory sees educations as an aspect of widening the inequality gap between the educated and uneducated individuals and feminist theory concentrates on understanding the origin of gender inequality in ...
