One of the great things that Piaget taught is that children are not "miniature adults!" They do not think the same way that adults do. They are progressing through a set of stages of cognitive development. Even though every adult has been through those stages as a child, it is easy to forget this and to expect children to think like adults do.

It has mostly been misconstrued that children are miniature adults and that they are less competent thinkers compared to adults. Psychological theorists and critiques led by Jean Piaget have since disputed that claim. In Jean Piaget’s cognitive development theory he attributes intelligence to be a product of a cognitive and mental development process where an individual builds on their environmental interaction and biological maturation. Santrock in support of Piaget’s theory states in his book “As kids interact with the world around them, they continually add new knowledge, build upon existing knowledge, and adapt previously held ideas to accommodate new information” (Santrock 67). Even though every adult has been through those stages as a child, it is easy to forget that and to expect children to think like adults. Piaget’s theory breaks down the intelligence development process in children into four stages and which highlight the way children see the world differently than the average adult does.
The first stage in Piaget’s theory is the sensorimotor stage and is the period from child birth to about two years. The stage mainly involves the infants trying to comprehend the new environment through coordinating their vision and sound with physical interactions in objects that include grasping and sucking. Piaget identified object permanence as the major achievement of the stage which he described as “A child understanding that objects continue to exist even though he or she cannot see or hear them” (Piaget, Gruber and Vonèche 114).
