There will be two writing assignments (WA) throughout the course of the semester. The following rubric will be used to evaluate each paper. Introduction
For a long time, people have always tended to relate on a more or less basic level. Very little attention was put in the contributing factors towards the same. However, there has been increased attention towards the underlying aspects that affect personal relationships, such as emotions and environment and this gave rise to emotional intelligence. Emotional intelligence is the capability of a person to understand and be in full understanding of his or her emotions, as well as that of others. It is the ability of one to read emotions and act accordingly expertly. When it comes to its relevance in psychology, emotional intelligence is basically a cognitive aspect of a person, which contributes to a great deal on interpersonal conduct. This paper looks at the validity or relevance of emotional intelligence through an in-depth analysis of the topic.
Summary
The readings offer a broad perspective and discussion on emotional intelligence. They offer an all-round understanding of the subject, ranging from the general description to the underlying psychological aspects. Some authors are of the suggestion that there is validity in the emotional intelligence out of the fact that it can be seen from interpersonal relationships. Various individual successes have been traced to emotional intelligence (Furnham, 2012). Emotional intelligence has also been linked to variations in sensitivity among individuals. For example, those with high emotional intelligence have a higher sensitivity to issues, compared to those with low EI.
The opponents of its validity, however, cite the fact that this is an incomplete aspect of personality. Research in emotional intelligence is still shallow, and much of what is being assumed right now is as a result of shallow and rushed conclusions.
Analysis and Response
From a general review, emotional intelligence seems not to be as valid as is it often portrayed to be. There are various facets of the topic that do not add up. According to Baker et al. (2013), emotional intelligence is all an intrinsic aspect of a person, rather than a phenomenon. When it is made to look like a phenomenon, then the whole essence of EI loses meaning. It is indeed true, as from the notion of the authors, that there are various instances whereby EI as a valid field has been disapproved and rendered entirely reliant on other factors.
