Communication is essential in human interaction, while reading and writing are closely linked and one improves their writing skills with practice. I learned to improve my writing when there was feedback to enhance, cohesion and coherence while using the appropriate grammar and punctuation. The different genres of writing follow the similar structure where there is an introduction, main body and conclusion (Hacker and Sommers 14). Repeated revision and proofreading allowed me to make the writing clearer, by eliminating mistakes and improving the content. I also focused on being specific about the central idea and refined the topic sentence, which sums up the central idea of the topic. Prioritizing the the purpose of writing planning, using the appropriate structure, checking for accuracy, and mechanical aspects of writing while avoiding plagiarism helped to improve my writing skills.
To improve my writing competence, I had to learn on how best to plan and the writing process from prewriting to the final draft. Writing is not merely linking words to create text as this process begins with planning and ends with correction. I learned about the mistakes that I often made and corrected them in subsequent draft papers and corrective feedback was effective to facilitate this. It was convenient and helpful to understand what is expected, and I looked at what different writers and authors had written in different genres. This made it easier to write to different audiences by tailoring the message without ignoring the expected writing structure and style.
