Introduction
Traditional conceptions of ability to read and write were associated with one's expertise in reading as well as writing. These specific skills have been enlarged to include the understanding skills in conversing, listening, perceiving and presenting (Hughes). These are skills also help people to communicate through various media forms such as visual arts, and drama performances. They also determine the literacy levels of an individual. The definition of literacy in this context includes the ability to speak fluently and be in a position to use any form of the media to communicate. In the modern world, technology is becoming the pillar of everything and increases the literacy levels of people around the world. However, as technology is taking over, poets pose to ask the role poetry is playing in increasing individuals' literacy levels. Is there a way that poetry can be taught to engage students so that it touches into the literacy developing powers? This paper will elaborate poetry's crucial role in ensuring the literacy levels are being improved and suggest different ways that can make poetry teaching effective. This will involve creation of new media technologies that can enhance students' skills (Kress).
Poetry ought to take an important place in the lives of people not only for the therapy it accords but also the way it arouses human senses, creates connections with us and with others and causes us to perceive things in synthesizing ways as it is required by the use of metaphors used in it. The appeal of poetry is drawn from its conciseness, brevity and its ability to relay a lot in a limited scope. According to Peacock (1993), poetry is the screen size art that provides a quick dive in a deep pool offering depth in a moment using the depth of a moment. Poetry has a way of empowering the economy and translates into other forms of oral and written type of communication. Michaels (1999), says, "Reading and writing poems can help us discover profound truths we did not realize we knew, Poetry arouses emotions and evokes thoughts about difficult social issues, poetry in itself is more than just a means of expression, it is also a way of knowledge. It requires and calls for the concentration of mind or sustained attention, which is not a custom to human lives.” The ability to link with the strange and with the familiar through the use of image or well-organized and arranged lines is what perhaps makes poetry powerful. It has a way of altering how we see common places and totally changes our perceptions.
