Requirements:

questions on the texts, and to provide a starting point for class discussions. The responses and ideas

Long Soldier’s WHEREAS
There are very few Americans knowledgeable about the Indian Occupation of Alcatraz and also the Occupation’s ‘Proclamatiojn’, which is a masterful document that uses diction, languae, and vocabulary of unfair paternalism and treaties against the leadership which came up with the treaties. It is one of the best examples of rhetorical resistance in America. Soldier’s WHEREAS is a reminder of the Proclamation as well as other documents which have been written on Alcatraz. However, WHEREAS is among the most innovative collections of poetry I have ever read, due to the mastery of language and inference to the issues in the society in that time.
In 2009, the UN congress rendered an official apology to the Native Americans through a congressional joint resolution by acknowledging that there had been a long history of cases of ill-conceived policies and official depredations by the federal government against Indians. The resolution uses the term whereas poetically, similar to yolta and anaphora, to help the author in enumerating a litany of claims, statements, and promises (Tippett 1). Wherever the word is used, the text is pushed along, thus improving its incantatory quality. I have also noticed that the author has issues with the ‘whereas’, with one of the main aims of her work being deconstructing the word. In this case, it is evident that whereas is used as a millstone for the work. Long Soldier manages to grind away at the word’s proclamatory and legal elements, thus eliminating its connotative and denotative sense of author, as I noted in her powerful poem.
The elisions she uses serve several purposes in this case. First, they creatively engage the reader and ensure that he/she takes part in the authorship of the federal documents done on the native people as well as implicating them on the colonial project (Tippett 1).
