Painting with words
As I close my eyes to fall asleep at night, my father gently kisses my forehead and quietly whispers, “...and that’s how the story ended”. That was how it was every night, with my dad and his stories. Most nights, I get to pick a book that he reads to me. Some nights, he would get creative and tell me his own stories.
As a kid, all those stories were amazing and wonderful to me. I got to be a princess, a fire-fighter, a cook, or literally anyone in the stories. My dad would make me the ruler of a whole castle, the hero that fought all the bad guys and won, and even a little kid who gets to eat a whole cake. The possibilities were endless.
However, as fun and creative those got, I lost interest in them as soon as I got my first phone. The nightly stories with my dad were replaced with long chats throughout the nights. I never got to read or write because I spent my time listening to music. Writing was far from my interests.
As far as I’m concerned, writing had a whole lot to do with handwriting. As a kid I had very bad handwriting. People would look at an average grade schooler’s handwriting and understand. When the same people would look at my handwriting, they would laugh their pants off. That’s how bad it was. They wouldn’t even bother looking at my content.
Every year during my elementary school, we were tasked to either draw or write about the Korean Independence Day. I never enjoyed drawing but I chose this because it was way easier for me. I figured it was less effort than to think of things to write. It was easier. A splash of color here, a random Korean flag there, and done. I never gave much thought to it. I was always the one that painted meaningless things all over the paper.
During my 4th year, we had the same assignment. As I opened my bag, I realized something, I forgot to bring the paint for my meaningless painting. Great! I didn’t want to get a detention. So, I went on and chose the other only option. I started to write an article.
