Discuss how the Iliad and the Odyssey differ in their depictions of the gods.
The Iliad and the Odyssey are works that are credited to Homer. However, the two are different in the way they perceive some things. The gods in Greek mythology are important characters, and in these two works, their involvement or lack thereof in the activities of human beings brings about some contradictions. The general belief regarding both works is that the Odyssey is supposed to be a sequel to the Iliad. However, there are more differences in the two works than there are similarities and this makes one question the intentions of Homer. What was his underlying message, if there was any? Why would he depict the gods in the manner that he did for both works? In the Iliad, the gods are supernatural beings that are selfish, temperamental like the mortals, divided, and treacherous as well. They are led by their greed and insecurities, and not their glory and position as gods. Additionally, they meddling in the affairs of the mortals interferes with fate because the gods want to exert their will upon mankind. On the other hand, the gods in the Odyssey are different. They are united, civil in how they approach certain issues and do not seek to impose their will over humanity. So, this article seeks to juxtapose the role of the gods in the Iliad as well as the Odyssey with a special focus on their relationship with humanity.
