DESCRIPTION OF ODYSSEUS VASE
In an innovative and imaginative way, the Ancient Greeks depicted scenes from the Odyssey and painted them on vases. Different Homer’s epic episodes can be seen on the vases. Clearly, the Greek culture valued the Odyssey as it had memorable scenes that have been passed on from generation to generation of collectors, art aficionados and classical literature enthusiasts. this essay focuses on describing the siren vase.
The Siren Vase’s painting depicts a happening in the Odyssey whereby Odysseus is tied onto his ship’s mass as they pass by the Sirens. The Sirens are three sea nymphs with the power to murder sailors using their bewitching songs (Sparks 122). The vase belongs to the ancient Greeks of Attica in 480BC to 470BC.
The medium used to make this vase is pottery. The vase resumes in a beautiful gold detail in a magnificent black ground. The image’s field is expressly established by a meander-frame that is divided by black as well as red slip checked squares. The frame’s sides have slender leafy garlands like wine-leaves. The center field of the two handles is covered by the painting. Below the picture field right on the underline meander, there are the sea waves. They indicate a play of light that results from the utilization of thin black slip in different colors. Generally, the sea appears dark and animated compared to the rest of the scene.
