War is Only an Invention by Margaret Mead
Margaret Mead is one of the many writers that provide great insights into the nature of human beings and the factors that drive their behavior. One such masterpiece authored by Margaret Mead is the “Warfare is Only an Invention—Not a Biological Necessity." In her arguments, Mead significantly supports war as man-made because of the various social drives and the environmental factors which influence man’s push for waging war against their own. Mead’s Claim “War is an Invention of Man”
War is an invention of man. Mead strongly supports this proposition using logical arguments meaning that she uses pathos as the major way of appealing to her audience about her claim. Therefore, much of the arguments presented in support of this claim use logic. Margaret Mead believes that war varies from one culture to another in her work. The fact that it varies from one culture to another indicates that it is influenced by the social systems of the culture of people in various regions of the world. Mead shows how violence is distributed over many countries and civilizations and how it is absent in many civilizations. On the one hand, she contends that some outlet for violent conduct is required for a man to realize his full human potential.
Evidence that War is Man’s Invention
On the other hand, Margaret notes that violence is an unavoidable byproduct of the evolution of the stage, the battle for land and other natural resources, of class societies arising not from the essence of man but the nature of history. She believes that conflict is unavoidable until we restructure our social order and abolish classes, power struggles, and possessions. Those who feel that conflict is physiologically essential would say it is "in our DNA." They might argue that both men and women are born with an aggressive tendency. When waging war, one of the most important factors is behavior. They think that action is required to reach one's full potential in combat. Those who argue that warfare is a physical requirement should look at someone with a competitive and aggressive desire to engage in warfare as an aspect that arises from their genetic makeup because they have to fight to retain and preserve what they believe to be true to them inherently. It is natural for people to choose to fight and have the guts to murder their opponents. Providing the two accounts indicates that Mead comprehends the two sides of the argument and chooses to support one that appeals to logic.
