In this assignment, you will choose a criminal case study from your own research or use one from the crime section of The Daily Chronicle website https://www(dot)chronline(dot)com/crime/ to examine the differences between the juvenile and adult court systems. You will read and summarize a case involving an adult. Then you will consider how this case would unfold differently had a juvenile committed the crime.
Instructions
Read the case information and write a 2–page paper in which you:
1. Summarize the facts of the case.
2. Examine how the procedure would differ if the defendant or defendants were underage when the offense was committed.
3. Ientify and discuss how juvenile proceedings differ from adult criminal proceedings as well as the differences in charges for the same crime.
4. Define the waiver process of transferring a juvenile into the adult court system.
5. Make and support recommendations for disposition based on the assumption that each defendant in your selected case is a minor being tried as a juvenile.

The case of Ryan Tylor Ward, 40, involved two counts of a residential burglary alleged to have occurred between January and May 2019 (The Chronicle Staff, 2021). The January incident occurred in a property in Middle Fork Road, and belongings, mostly jewelry worth more than $5000 was reported to have been stolen. In the second incident that occured on Meskill Road property, Ward was alleged to have stolen items worth more than $1000, this time including a firearm and ammunition. Ward was charged with the two counts of residential burglary following a forensic investigation and a confession by the criminal offender to have committed the crime, terming them “crimes of opportunity” (The Chronicle staff, 2021 par. 8). The allegations towards Ward on the residential burglary involving firearm and ammunition appeared to bear the most serious charges, at most 10 imprisonment years and a fine of up to $20,000 (The Chronicle staff, 2021). Ward was sentenced to 19 months imprisonment at the Coyote Ridge Correction Centre.
In most jurisdictions, in a case where an juvenile violates an authoritative rule such as partaking in burglary, the act is treated as delinquency and not as a criminal offense. Arresting and detention of a juvenile alleged to have committed a crime is solely upon the law enforcement officers who may deem it necessary to apprehend the minor as long as they have reason to believe the minor has committed an offense. Parents or guardians have a right to be notified in case an arrest is meted on a minor (HG.org, n.d.). For an adult, it is different because an arrest is only made after an arrest warrant is issued or the arresting officer is a witness to the alleged criminal offense. The arrest warrant filed by the Lewis County Superior court for Ward’s arrest would have been unnecessary if the defendant was a minor.
